During the winter of the Southern Hemisphere, Antarctica does not get any sunlight in 6 months. In summer, the sun is always on the horizon. Much of sunlight down surface is reflected back by the surface of white ice. The receiving less energy from the sun plus the terrain elevation (Antarctica is the highest continent in the world with 2,800m above sea level) makes Antarctica the coldest climates on Earth
